Nurses and assistants in nursing working in aged care and public health in the Federal electorate of New England have joined together to seek Tony Windsor's support. By supporting aged care in Budget 2012, Tony Windsor can make a real difference to thousands of older Australians living in New England.
Nurses in NSW have fought hard for desperately needed nurse-to-patient ratios, which have now been delivered via set nursing hours per patient day. New funding is available for 1,400 more nurses and midwives to join NSW public health over the next two years. It means there will be better working conditions and more nurses and midwives in our hospitals – a key ingredient to better patient care.
It's a great time to go into nursing in NSW, or to come back to it. There are hundreds of new positions available right now.
In this issue: A decision by Goulburn Base Hospital nurses to close beds in the interests of patient safety has wrung concessions from management. Also, 110 nurses attended the NSWNA Annual Aged Care Nurses Forum last month.
The new state Government has shown that it is going to target the pay and conditions of public sector workers including nurses, so we need to prepare now to repel any attack on nurses’ conditions.

Recent changes by the O'Farrell Government have reduced the rights at work for public sector nurses and midwives. Additionally, the Government has flagged significant reductions to the public sector workforce, and that means fewer nurses, teachers, fire, ambulance and police officers.Members are strongly urge to attend a rally to be held 8th September 2011 in The Domain, Sydney and send a very strong message to the NSW Government.
