UWS Research To Help Stop Nurse Bullies
Type: Union News Subject: OHS
1 December 2004
The NSWNA will use the findings of a UWS research project into workplace bullying by nurses to help stamp out the issue in NSW hospitals and aged care facilities.
The report of the stage one findings of the three-year research project will also aid the major campaign by NSW unions - including the NSWNA - to stamp out workplace bullying in NSW, said NSWNA General Secretary, Brett Holmes.
'Unfortunately, in any large group of people you will find a few bullies. I am not surprised the report revealed the prevalence of bullying in the nursing profession.
'From my own experience as a nurse, I have witnessed the behaviour of certain colleagues that was intimidating and could be classified as bullying,' he said.
With NSW Health, the NSWNA has developed a comprehensive policy to address this issue in the public hospital system.
'Private hospitals and aged care employers also have an obligation to eradicate any bullying in their workplaces,' said Brett.
